Namma Madras - Rediscovered Wall Tax Today, I will tell you about one of the busiest localities of Madras (aka Chennai). When one comes out of Central Railway station, on the left is the entry / exit point for taxis and cars. Recently in Aug 2017, the Police made it the nodal entry / exit points to and from Central Rly Station. The road is called Wall Tax Road (officially VOC street, but none knows this name!). Stretching from Central Station, the road is about 5 km, is parallel to the railway tracks. There is a wall all along, and was built in 1772-73, as a protection from invaders like French and Mughals. The road has Muthialpet on one side. There were five gates for the people and the goods to move about. Now only one named Elephant Gate remains. At the end of the road there was a jail to imprison people ; though that road named Old Jail Road is still there, the prison is not there. This shop for herbal medicines was started 132 years ago in 1885 at the Kutchery Road in Mylapore near Arundale Street by one Mr. Krishnaswamy Chetty. They dealt with all sorts of herbal medicines. Whatever the consumer wanted, the shop will weigh that and pack it in a container and give it to the customer. Thus, the shop's name "changed" to dabba chetty kadai (dabba in Tamil means container). தலை ஆவணி அவிட்டம். இந்த வருஷம் (2017) சந்திர க்ரஹணத்தினால் 5-8-2017 நடக்க இருந்த ஆவணி அவிட்டம் (யஜுர் உபாகர்மா) 6-9-2017 சனிக்கிழமை என மாறிவிட்டது. சில பேர் ஆகஸ்டிலும் மீதி பேர் செப்டம்பரிலும் செய்தார்கள். நம் குடும்பத்தில் எல்லாரும் செப்டம்பர் 6ல் தான் செய்தோம். காலையில் 7 மணிக்கு நான் செய்தேன். பின்னர் அர்விந்திற்கு செய்வித்தேன். நானும் விஜயாவும் 9 மணி சுமாருக்கு அருண் வீட்டிற்கு சென்று இட்லி சாப்பிட்டோம். ஃபிப்ரவரியில் உபநயனம் ஆன ஸ்ரீராமிற்கு இது தலை ஆவணி அவிட்டம். அடையாறு ஸ்ரீ அனந்த பத்மனாப ஸ்வாமி கோயிலுக்கு அருண் ஸ்ரீராமை அழைத்துப் போனான். அங்கு நமது வீட்டு வாத்யார் ஸ்ரீ வெங்கடாசலம் எல்லாருக்கும் சமஷ்டியாக செய்து வைத்தார். அப்பம் முதலியவற்றை காயத்ரி செய்து கொடுத்தாள். அவள் இன்று லீவு போட்டிருந்தாள். பூணூல் போட்டுக் கொண்ட பின்னர் நாந்தி நடைபெற்றது. 9 வாத்யார்களுக்கு, அரிசி வாழைக்காய், 100.00 தக்ஷிணை கொடுத்து ஸ்ரீராம் முடித்தான். மத்தியானம் 1-30க்கு எல்லாம் ஆயிற்று. வீட்டிற்கு வந்து எல்லாரும் ஒன்றாக வடை, பாயசத்துடன் விருந்து சாப்பிட்டோம். மாலை 7 மணிக்கு அருண் ஆகிய

Continuing Our Story about Namma MADRAS The Great Men and Women Who Formed our City OLCOTT MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL, BESANTNAGAR Colonel Henry Steel OLCOTT, was born in the year 1832, in New Jersey USA. After graduation, he was a military officer, lawyer, journalist and later in 1864 became a spiritualist. He and Helena Blavatsky (12/8/1831 - 8/5/1891), a Russian spiritualist joined together to form the Theosophical Society of USA in 1875. He was the first president and she was its Secretary. They left USA in 1878 for India to establish the Theosophical Society at ADYAR, Madras. He was a Buddhist and he worked in Sri Lanka to revive Buddhism. On May 19, 1880, he and Blavatsky were formally acknowledged as Buddhists at Galle in Sri Lanka. Helena died in London in 1891, but Olcott pursued the work with the Theosophical Society at Adyar. Madame Annie Besant joined him in this pursuit and after Olcott's death in February 1907, Annie Besant took over as its president and continued the

Namma Madras Madras Story Retold and Remembered. THE GREAT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES OF MYLAPORE. Thirukattupalli is a small village in Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu. It boasts of an ancient history, mentoned in Ponniyin Selvan book by Kalki. About 2.5 km from this village is PAZHAMANERI another small village. In this village there lived one family of Sundaram Iyer and his wife Subbalakshmi Ammal. On 7th February 1864, a son was born to them and was named Sivaswami. He had his early schooling in nearby schools and studied in different colleges and obtained his Law degree.  He was a shining lawyer throughout and finally he became the Advocate General of Madras Presidency .He was elected to the Senate of Madras University and the vice chancellor of the Madras University, then the VC of Banaras Hindu University. He was a Member of the Executive Council of the Governor of Madras. He was a keen educationist, in particular of Girls' education. He wanted to uplift girls education.

This (20th Aug) evening Vijaya and I went to Aru Padai veedu Koil at Besantnagar. Here, the six Koils for Murugan - like Pazhani, Tiruttani, Swamimalai, Tiruchendur, Tirupparankundram, Pazhamudhisolai have been constructed in one complex and in granite. One can have darshan of all six Murugans here. Plus one Vinayakar. The temple came up here 33 years ago. The history follows :- In 1984, Kanchi Paramacharya was camping at Gulbarga, Karnataka, when Dr Alagappa Alagappan, a former UN official met him and expressed his desire to have all the six Veedus in one place, perhaps in Chennai. With His enthralling smile, the Kanchi sage looked at Alagappa and said, Why not? You start it, I will help. Dr Alagappa who was a resident of New York, started looking for suitable place. The Sage called the CM of TNadu (MGR) and told him. MGR immediately offered free a large plot (more than 2 acres of land) near the sea shore of Besantnagar. Namma Madras Rediscoverd Madras Woodlands Hotel In a small village in South Kanara, Karnataka state, Kadandale (grinding stone, in Kannada), there lived a priest eking out a modest living. To this archaka, on October 21, 1898 was born a son. The father named him as Krishna, the child's grandfather's name. The child was underfed, illiterate, being taken out of school to help around the house, ill-clothed. But the child pulled on. He worked in 8 different mutts there, but did not get any economic advance. A severe bout of Malaria and he was sent back home. When better, he worked as helper in a village eatery - drawing water, dishwashing, grinding flour for idli and dosai. Grinding flour in the stone mortars seemed to be his destiny (his native village was Kadandale, you see). He used to get Rs 3.00 per month as salary. His brother-in-law Ranganna came one day from Madras and took Krishna to Madras; Krishna reached Madras like Dick Whittington! He started working first as a

Namma Madras GEMS of Mylapore. RR Sabha. Mylapore, Chennai is well-known for its cultural, bhakti, historical background. Even today the one place everyone wishes to visit Mylapore for its cultural brilliance. There is that world-famous temple of Sri Karpagambal sametha Sri Kapaleeswara. Around this temple are its four Maada Veethis (streets) - East, West, South, and North Maada Veethis. The East Maada veethi is the location for many cultural centres like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Rasika Ranjani Sabha (RR Sabha). The RR Sabha is the oldest Sabha in the whole of Chennai, it was founded in 1929. It is located in Sundareshwarar Street at the southern end of the East Maada street near Lady Sivaswami Iyer School (more about this famous school later). Carnatic music concerts were held monthly twice then, dramas were staged, and music classes were also conducted there. "left, right, left, left ....." அந்த எளியவர்க்கு எப்படி சொல்வது?? “இங்கிருந்து ரொம்ப தூரம்,” என்று சொல்லி விட்டு, “எதற்கு இப்போது பாம்பன் ஸ்வாமி கோயில் ....?” என இழுத்தேன். மெல்லிய குரலில் பதில் வந்தது, “அங்கு சாப்பாடு போடு

GANESAN, brother of Vijaya, completed 80 years on 1 June 2017 and he wished to visit Kanchipuram on this occasion to seek the blessings of Sri Kamakshi Amman there. He, along with his daughter Shobha and her family, and son Ravi with his family 9 came to Chennai on 29th May and stayed at Saligramam.  On 30th they visited Sri Kapaleeswarar Koil Mylapore. On 31st they took rest. On 1st June Thursday, all 9 of them, Kumar Lalita, Vijaya, Arun, Gayathri, Sowmya, Sriram (in Arun's car) left Chennai by 7AM and went to Kanchipuram. There after worshipping at Kamakshi Amman koil, they went to Sri Ekambareswarar koil and to their old school (Pachaippa's school, where their father Sri GN Yegnaswamy Iyer worked). After lunch in a hotel, they returned to Chennai. On Friday, the 2nd June, all the 9 from Mumbai, Indira, Lalita, and Kumar came to our house. BANGALORE MAY 2017 I booked our onward tickets on 4th May 2017 for our journey to Bangalore by Double Decker of 12th May. Earlier Arvind had booked his, Aditi's a nd Arjun's tickets separately for this train, and I booked for we two, and Sowmya, Sriram. On 12th, all of us got up very early and got ready.  Arun and Gayathri came with Sowmya and Sriram. All seven of us travelled by a taxi and reached Central and boarded the train C5 Lower. The train left by 07:25 and reached Bangalore Cantonment by 12:30. Ashok came with his car and all of us went to BTM Layout. Steaming hot lunch and all of us slept for a while. Today 12th May was Srinath's birthday. On 13th May, Saturday, VIBHA came to BTM and stayed here for the night, Next day 14th May we celebrated Sowmya's birthday (actually it is  on 17th). With cake cutting and all. On Monday the 15th Arvind and Arjun left back for Chennai by 6 AM Shatabdi express. This train was delayed by over 3 hours and reached Chennai b

Prakash, s/o Padma akka and Venkatasubramanian Athimber, had lost his wife RAJESWARI(B:1972)  on 07-11-2014 due to Cancer. He was living alone at Ambattur. Suddenly on 12th May 2017 he informed all of us including his younger sister Srividya, that he has re-married (today-12-05-2017, Friday) at Marriage Registrar Office, Chennai. It was quite sudden and most unexpected. He has married a widow, HEMALATHA, around 30. Prakash is born on 5-10-1968, which makes him 49 years old today. Let him be happy. We wish him all the Best. க்ருஹ ப்ரவேசம். 29-04-2017 கேளம்பாக்கம் - வண்டலூர் ரோட்டில், கண்டிகை என்னுமிடத்திற்கு அருகில், UNITEC COவின் வீடுகள் புக் பண்ணி சுமார் 7-8 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு பின்னால், 2017 ஏப்ரல் மத்தியில் வீடுகளை முடித்து, சாவியை வாசு / ஸ்ரீகாந்த் இருவரிடமும் கொடுத்தார்கள். கணபதி ஹோமம் மட்டும் செய்யலாம் என வாசு முடிவெடித்தான். ஏப் 29 சனிக்கிழமை செய்ய எண்ணினான். வாசு, ராஜி, ஜெயஸ்ரீ, ஆனந்த், ஸ்ரீநாத் ஆகியோர் 27 (ஏப்ரல் 2017) காலை 11-30 க்கு தில்லியிலிருந்து வந்தனர். நம் வீட்டில் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு, 1 மணி சுமாருக்கு, அவர்கள் யாவரும் மடிப்பாக்கம் சென்றனர். மாலை 7 மணிக்கு வாசுவும் ஆனந்தும் யூனிடெக்கிலிருந்து திரும்பினர். 7-45க்கு ராஜி, ஜெயஸ்ரீ, ஸ்ரீநாத் தி.நகர் போய்விட்டு, புடைவை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு திரும்பினர். 28-07-2017 வெள்ளிக்கிழமை : விஜயா, ஜெயஸ்ரீ, ராஜி, வாசு ஆகியோர் ஸ்ரீ மருந்தீஸ்வரர் கோயிலுக்கு சென்றனர். பின்னர், நிறைய சாமான்கள் வாங்கி வந்தனர். சாப்பிட்ட பிறகு, எல்லாரும் யூனிடெக் சென்றனர். நேற்றும், இன்றும் அருண் கார்தான். இரவு 7-30க்கு திரும்பினர். அரவிந்த், ஸ்ருதி இருவரும் 7-15க்கு இங்கு வந்து சா

Namma Madras SRI PARTHASARATHY PERUMAL KOIL, THIRUVALLIKKENI. WEDNESDAY, 22-03-2017 Vijaya and I left house by 3-45 PM in an UBER taxi for the koil. We reached there by 4-15 PM (Rs 145.00). There was not any crowd and we had a good darshan of the Perumal at a close distance. After worshipping here, Thayar Vedavalli Sannidhi, Yoga Narasimhar, and Aandal Sannidhis, we came out. We walked to Bharatiyar Memorial, Sri Raghavendra Mutt on the TP Koil Street nearby. BIG BANK THEORY. Govt of India have cleared on Wednesday (that is, yesterday), SBI's acquisition of five subsidiary banks. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, SB Hyderabad, SB Travancore, SB Mysore, SB Patiala will merge with SBI. After the merger, (the exact date of merger not yet known), SBI will have an asset base of 37 lakh crore rupees, 22,500 branches, 58,000 ATMs and 50 crore customers. I am proud to be one of those 50 cr customers and Vijaya is one more customer of SBI. I joined SBI at Kanchanbagh (Chandrayangutta branch) Hyderabad during 1st week of March 1974.
